praise men. McCormick conveys the idea that gender in an important factor in Nepal. Although it is important the gender roles are very unfair. Throughout the beginning of the novel “Sold”, Lakshmi’s mother Ama knows the importance of having a man in the family. She tries to teach this to her so she better understands this idea. During this part of the story, Lakshmi is describing her father. She speaks on the things he does in his daily life as well as what is wrong with his body that prevents him from working. For example she says “Ama says we are lucky to have a man at all. She says i am to honor and praise him, respect and thank him for taking us in after my father died. And so i act the part of a dutiful daughter.” (McCormick, 8). Ama tries bolting this idea in Lakshmi’s head that males have been and will always be superior compared to females. Since Lakshmi is young it is important for her to learn that she has to praise men so as she gets older she’ll understand her role as a women like most females in Nepal. In another scene in the story, Lakshmi is describing where she lives. By doing this she is giving readers an insight on what her life is like. She explains it like “A tin roof
