CHAPTER 9 APPLICATION PAPER 2 Christmas 3 arrive to jury duty are called “venire”. The venire either remains the same or shrinks due to any jurors that are deemed unfit for jury service. This is called a hardship exemption. “To reduce the number of hardship exemptions and make jury service less burdensome, the one day or one trial system has been widely adopted” (Costanzo and Krauss, 2018 pg. 207). This process allows jurors to participate for one day leaving when the trial is complete (Costanzo and Krauss, 2018). The last phase “ voir dire ” is the last step in the elimination process. Lawyers are able to challenge the potential jurors to see if any have prejudices or biases that would make them impartial in ruling the case (Costanzo and Krauss, 2018). This part of the selection process prohibits lawyers from eliminating members due to their gender or race. The end goal during the jury selection process is for lawyers to select jurors that will be the most beneficial in helping them secure a verdict. Juror Characteristics and Attitudes as Predictors of Verdict Some people who are unfamiliar with the juror process, may view the service of a juror as easy.
