Saudi Arabia is a friend of the West so they want to keep the price low and have a set amount but the others want to gouge the Americans because we are crack heads but with oil o US and others hate OPEC because cartels fly in the face of free market capitalism The Saudi’s and others argue that it’s not that bad of a thing They are aware that you don’t want to jack your prices too high or the crack heads won’t be able to afford it and that they could find another thing to get high off or find other countries with cheaper oil o Major non-OPEC oil producers: Russia Norway Mexico De Beers Cartel o A group of businesses that controls 80-90% of the world’s diamonds in its entirety o They have been labeled as a monopoly o A monopoly is when a single entity controls a resource/service in its entirety o Why We Work Together: Security & Defense Supranationalist organizations based on defense, peace, and security After WW1, and much more seriously after WW2, states started thinking about how they could work together to deal with and stop conflicts because no one wanted a WW3 1919 – they attempted this with the creation of the League of Nations o It failed miserably because the US and some others weren’t ready to play this game yet 1945 – United Nations was created after WW2

o Main goal – provide a common form for all states to talk to each other and give everyone an equal voice in a controlled equal forum before things turn into bloody conflicts o They need some way to enforce these laws and some justice system and etc. o It has evolved closer to a global government of sorts This is a hell of a lot more than just keeping this peace which was the original intention Other countries in the world have thought of others ways to prevent conflict that isn’t quite so complicated o It is focused on the threat of annihilation or at least the threat of pain if a conflict were to break out instead of focusing on peace o Back in the day, countries would sign agreements with each other all the time in order to prevent conflicts Pacts of non-aggression – two states get together and realize the fact that shit is about to hit the fan and they promise to not attack each other Pretty famous, most recent one: leading up to WW2 Germany and Russia signed a pact of non-aggression Defense Pacts - much more common and very similar but more proactive: would have been signed between two countries promising to help each other if they have been attacked There were multiple defense pacts signed between European countries which actually started WW1 They thought defense would prevent a fight from occurring This concept has been taken too its logical evolution in a globalized world where it’s not now just state to state but groups of states in a single strong umbrella 1946 – NATO 1955 – Warsaw Pact 2001 – SCO Biggest groups and the most military powerful o NATO o Warsaw Pact o SCO o UN – UN Permanent Security Council
