In Asia there are several countries with very high health expenditure (500 to 3000) and these have very low Infant Mortality, which would contribute to the stronger (negative) correlation. However there are also a number of Asian countries with very low health expenditure and a variety of Infant Mortality rates. We conclude that there are very strong factors other than health expenditure, affecting infant mortality rates.

In the FSU, those countries with low infant mortality are those with somewhat higher GDP. For countries with very low GDP, the infant mortality is variable up to about 60 per thousand live births. (f) Figure 1.4 (boxplots) I would choose this graphic because it is easy to quantify the differences between the regions for infant mortality. If I am wanting to highlight just this variable, then this graphic is probably the best to use as it tells us about this variable alone. The median value of Infant Mortality in Africa is about 67, whereas the median for the other two regions is well below 30. The boxplot makes it clear that the bulk of the countries in Africa have infant mortality rates well above those in the other two regions. For example, 75% of African countries have infant mortality rates above 50, and ranging up to well above 100 (that is above one in ten live births). Most countries in Asia and all countries in the FSU have infant mortality rates below the median rate for Africa. or Density plot for infant mortality (bottom right hand of Figure 1.1) Although it is not as easy to quantify the differences, the different shape and position of the Africa frequency density for this variable mean that this visualisation highlights the difference. It is very clear that a large number of African countries have high infant mortality, for example above 60 and even a significant number above 100 (which is 1 in 10 live births.) The modal value is above 60 for Africa, whereas it is below 15 for the other regions. or Figure 1.2 The three scatter-graphs in Figure 1.2 make it clear that a large proportion of African countries (probably more than half) have infant mortality above 60, whereas only one Asian country and no FSU countries have infant mortality above 60. Question 3 (a) (i) The scale command standardises all the variables. Standardisation in this case is the usual statistical concept. For each variable, the mean and standard deviation are calculated, then

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
