Although Albany was once on Goneril’s side I believe that he is now changing sides and has realized that his wife is no good. It is as if Albany knows future because he is pleased to hear that the enemy has landed but at the same time he still trusts Edmund because he disagrees when he hears about Gloucester’s betrayal. I predict that Albany’s reaction to the news foreshadows his future actions. “Oh, the difference of man and man! To thee a woman’s services are due. My fool usurps my body.” Pg 179 (E) Goneril expresses her love and affection toward Edmund by comparing him to her husband. She wants Edmund to marry her because he actually obeys her and shows his love towards her in return. Goneril also now views Albany as a fool because she has heard of his change and fears he won’t fall for any of her tricks or orders. Besides being malicious, Goneril also demonstrates how unfaith she is because she kisses Edmund and loves him when she’s still married to Albany. Shakespeare is trying to explain how the bad are willing to betray themselves. Albany is unaware of Goneril’s affection towards Edmund which makes him a little vulnerable. “You are not worth the dust which the rude wind Blows in your face. I fear your disposition. Pg 179 (CL) Albany has changed his feelings toward Goneril because he says she is not even worth the dust that blows on her face. The passage also clarifies

That nature, which contemns its origin Cannot be bordered certain in itself. She that herself will sliver and disbranch From her material sap perforce must wither And come to deadly use . why Albany was displeased when he heard news that his wife had arrived. Albany is disgusted with Goneril and no longer trusts her because she betrayed and deceived her father and broke off the relationship between her and King Lear. Shakespeare use of the metaphor helps the reader understand how Goneril’s broken relationship with her father is compared to a branch that tries to brake off a tree. “Patience and sorrow strove Who should express her goodliest. You have seen Sunshine and rain at once—her smiles and tears Were like a better way. Those happy smilets That played on her ripe lip seemed not to know What guests were in her eyes, which parted thence As pearls from diamonds dropped. In brief, Sorrow would be a rarity most beloved If all could so become it.” Pg 187 (R) The gentleman was describing to Kent, Cordelia’s reaction when she received and read the letters. Shakespeare uses plenty of metaphors throughout the play to describe a character’s emotion or reaction. In the flowing passage he uses sunshine and rain to describe Cordelia’s tears of joy and sorrow for her father’s experience. Although Cordelia was disowned from her father and banished, she was still filled with joy as she accepted and received news that her father was on his way to her.
