field of study. Stamlets is an active member of the global science community, he continues to contribute to his own research, as well as other projects. He is a member of the editorial board of the International Journal of Medicinal Mushrooms 10 . At the University of Arizona College of Medicine he is an advisor for the Program for Integrative Medicine 11 . Paul Stamets is involved in two National Institute of Health-funded clinical studies on HIV and cancer treatments using mushrooms as adjunct therapy 12 . Adjunct therapy meaning that the mushrooms are an additive, a supplement rather than the essential part of the medicine. Paul revealed his discoveries relating to the benefits of mushrooms in connection to cancer treatment in a talk at Exponential Science in November of 2014. For thousands of years our ancestors have used mushrooms for medicinal purposes 13 In 2009 Stamets mother was diagnosed with stage four breast cancer that had spread to her liver and sternum. Her doctor suggested chemotherapy and Herceptin and noted a study into turkey tail mushrooms. Out of a group of fifty patients prescribed Herceptin she was the only survivor. Five years later and Patty Stamets is still alive and well, supporting her son on his mission to change the field of medicine and science, as well as the world. Stamets notes 7 8 9 10 11 12 13

that we are beginning to discover a set of very complex molecules that mushrooms form, for example; two coumarin compounds that are unique to the Agarikon mushroom have been shown to help fight the bacteria that causes tuberculosis. Agarikon also displays antiviral activity against cowpox, swing and bird flu, and herpes. Further studies regarding the relationship between certain mushroom species and dwindling bee populations are also in the process. Overall, Paul Stamets is a world-class mycocologist that is looking a little closer at things that have been a part of our world forever in order to find new uses. Paul Stamets’ has made significant discoveries relating to real-life issues such as cancer. These issues are not exclusive to any one nation, everyone is vulnerable to illness and so his work is impactful on the global scale. Hasan Minhaj
