The Whigs successfully identified the Democrats with the depression, blaming the monetary policies of Jackson and Van Buren. Using many of the campaign tactics of the Democrats, the Whigs also portrayed Harrison as a military hero and self-made man. Harrison won the presidency, and the Whigs gained control of Congress after the largest-ever election turnout.
