2.3 Challenges and Opportunities A good understanding of organisational behaviour is very important for managers. Look at your workplace. Are there many changes going on? There may be new colleagues joining the company, there may be changes in the management team, or there may be changes in the demographics of the organisation. There are no simple and universal principles that can fully explain organisational behaviour. Since human beings are highly complex, we cannot make sweeping generalisations. However, this does not mean that we cannot offer reasonably accurate explanations of human behaviour or make valid predictions. It only means that OB concepts must consider situational concerns. There are a few key changes in the world that you should be aware of. 2.3.1 Globalisation Organisations are no longer constrained by national borders. The company that you work for may interact with clients internationally or have headquarters based in another country. In this global economy, you may find yourself working in another country or may already have the experience of moving abroad for work. As the work becomes increasingly global, managers need to learn how to work with and manage a workforce with very different needs and aspirations. BUS103 STUDY UNIT 1 SU1 8 do you think organisations make such decisions to relocate their manufacturing operations? Please click here to login to your Library account and access the Newslink database. Search for the article titled “Getting the right site” in The Business Times on July 14, 2014. When you read the article, take note of how globalisation has affected where businesses choose to set up their factories. 2.3.2 Workforce Diversity As the world become increasingly globalised, it is no surprise that organisations are also becoming increasingly diverse, with employees of different ages, races, ethnicities, and backgrounds. It is no different in Singapore. Look at your workplace. Do all your colleagues have the same background? Are your colleagues from different parts of the world? Recognise that there are differences in people and that there are unique contributions that each individual can add to the organisation. Workforce Diversity: The concept that organisations are becoming more varied in terms of gender, age, race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, and other differences. A good grasp of OB concepts will allow managers to be better able at working with and managing an increasingly diverse workforce. We will cover workforce diversity in greater detail in Chapter 3. You should now read Robbins and Judge (2015), Chapter 1, pp. 48-57 to learn more about the challenges and opportunities for organisational behaviour.
