FIRE PROTECTION DETECTION & SUPPRESSION STSTEMS 18 The fire pump installed at the Washington Distribution Warehouse was not part of the specifications listed in the fire protection system and should’ve never have been utilized. As the piping was incorrect to the water source, the butterfly valves and pressure regulators were about 10 feet from the suction flange and the pump was not properly grounded as the surge protector did not meet UL standards. Other problems with the system included elbows that hindered the flow of water thru the system, there was no jockey pump installed within the system to assist with maintaining water pressure, due to the instability of the city service and power failure (Brakhage, C., Abrams, A., & Fortney, J., 2016). Aside from the installation and components of the warehouse system, the inspector reviewing the system lacked training to fully understand the inadequacies of the system, as the NFPA doesn’t mandated inspectors to have operational knowledge of systems. The NFPA only suggests that business owners assess hazards about the fire system. The business owners lack of interest in improving the system was clear as they decided to ignore fire system standards by cutting corners to save money (NFPA 14). Moving forward, the fire pump that should be installed at the warehouse should be diesel powered. The advantageous of diesel engine pump outweigh other pumps as far as stability and reliability. Additionally, a diesel engine controller would be needed to develop a close circuit system between the storage batteries and starter. The system would also have a vertical shaft turbine pump, so it would never need to be primed, as the rotating turbines are inside the unit (Brakhage, C., Abrams, A., & Fortney, J., 2016). When choosing the balance of the pump components and accessories several factors must be considered as follows: 1) pressure maintenance pump 2) jockey pump 3) relief valves and 4) circulation valves

Upon completion of the new system, I would schedule regular inspections on all components of the fire pump system. This would insure that problems would be detected prior to a mishap and guarantee the pump would always be operational.
