Laboratory Animal Technician (LAT) Biomedical research companies and educational institutions may em- ploy a laboratory animal technician (LAT). Some biomedical research and educational facilities have just a few animals; some have thousands. To ensure accurate research data, these institutions must keep research animals healthy, in the best possible environment. The laboratory ani- mal technician oversees the daily care, feeding, comfort, and observation of these research animals; laboratory animal technicians also maintain the proper environmental conditions. The laboratory animal technician checks the animals daily and notifies the researcher of any abnormal conditions that affect the animals. The laboratory animal technician, su- pervised by the veterinarian, may also perform such veterinary technical procedures as collecting blood samples, taking radiographs, assisting in surgery, and other advanced animal nursing procedures.
