Referring back to my step-mom, she has come across many racist comments in her lifetime. Many people have asked her how she crossed the Rio Grande and what it is like to be a “wetback”. However, even though she is resilient to these comments, they can affect her. Many people who also experience the same racist and derogatory comments can have a sense of resentment towards their ethnicity. People can be turned away from occupations and opportunities for social services. To no fault of their own, they are victims of uncontrollable hateful actions to the point where try to conform to unreasonable standards. Thus, America shouldn’t be known as a melting pot.
