There are multiple stores such as GNC and the Vitamin Shoppe that offer supplements and vitamins. No palm readers were noted during observation. You would have to travel 45 min into Chicago to find one. ● Fire and Police Services Do you see any fire and police services/equipment/officers? Where are the closest fire and/or police stations ? Rockford Police have a main building downtown. They have started community policing, this is where they have built several smaller stations 8
around the city to provide a faster response and have an increased presence in the community. The closest police station in 3 miles from here. The fire dept. has multiple locations. The closest to here is less than 2 miles. They are located within neighborhood and can reach most residents within 5 minutes. ● Educational Resources Where is the nearest public library? Discuss the Schools and Universities/Community colleges ? There is the Rockford Public Library main branch, but hey have another on the other side of town. There are multiple colleges and universities. They have the local community college called Rock Valley College, this campus has a 2 year associates nursing program. They have a private college called Rockford University. There are also satellite campuses for Northern Illinois University and University of Illinois Chicago. The UIC campus is strictly for medical school, nursing, and pharmacy. There is also a private 4 year nursing college called St. Anthony’s College of Nursing. Along with these there are from profit colleges that include Rasmussen College and Judson University. Since this is an area that is dominate with health care, all the hospitals are teaching hospitals and a lot of students from the UIC and St. Anthony’s , and Rock Valley College stay local. There are also many private and public schools. ● Religions What signs of religion do you see? Discuss the types of churches, mosques, temples? What services are offered by these churches, for example, Day Care, Mother’s Day Out, Summer Camps, Languages Classes, Citizenship Classes, Food Banks, Clothing, other . There are many religions in the area. They have Catholic, Lutheran, Christian, Jewish, Jehovah Witnesses, and Scientologists. No local mosques are within the city limits. Each church provides something. Most of the Catholic church offer childcare and some form of school until middle school age. There are 4 local Christian based private schools and one private catholic high school called Boylan High School. Most churches offer Wednesday and Sunday services. Some do sponsor refuges and offer English as a second language classes. No local ones do food banks or clothing that are advertised. There are churches about every 3-4 9
