Understanding communication processes and the ethics of your own communication choices is the first step toward you becoming a more competent communicator. Chapter 2 2.1 Define the research concepts paradigm, theory, and method. There are three research paradigms (belief systems) in communication research today. Each paradigm carries with it a set of assumptions about knowledge, the nature of reality, and human nature. Theory is a set of statements that explains a particular phenomenon. Methods describe the specific ways in which scholars collect and analyze data, the results of which are used to test their theories. The Social Science Approach

2.2 Explain how behaviorism, causality, and quantitative methods influence the social scientific approach to studying communication. The social science approach emphasizes individual forces, seeks to predict human behavior, emphasizes universal theories, and generally uses quantitative research methods. Human communication is not always predictable, and in particular, predictions based on laboratory research may not hold true outside the lab. The Interpretive Approach 2.3 Describe the role that humanism, description, and qualitative methods play in the interpretive approach to studying communication. Interpretive researchers generally use qualitative methods. The strengths of the interpretive approach include the in-depth understanding of communication in specific situations, but it is limited in that it usually involves few research participants—or none—as is the case in rhetorical analyses of texts. A second limitation is that the researchers often are outsiders to the communities they study, which means that they may not accurately interpret the communication patterns they see.
