N4685 Capstone Seminar Indications Describe in the space below the topic, problem, or issue within the focus area that your Capstone Project will address. Explain why this issue is important and why you selected it in particular. Provide examples of situations related to the issue in your practice and other examples you might expect to see in your selected focus area. The topic I chose for my Capstone project is falls and fall prevention. Falls can be detrimental for both patients and family members and affects patients of all ages. Physical disabilities, acute changes in health, environmental factors, medication side effects and illicit drugs and alcohol can lead to potential falls and injuries. I have been a RN in the emergency room for the past 10 years and have been witness to many falls occurring in our department by staff members, patients and visitors. I selected this topic because I believe it is one that is taken for granted within the hospital and is one that is not a big issue until there is a fall or injury within the department. After choosing this topic I have paid closer attention to fall prevention and risks within my own department and noticed that we need to improve our awareness and incorporate it into the care we provided within the department. I would like my staff to also be aware of the many potential falls risks we encounter each day within the ED and be educated on what interventions can be made to prevent potential falls and injuries. Audience Describe in the space below your target audience, including the setting for which your information dissemination will be planned. This project is designed for an in-person setting so an internet or online audience/setting would not be appropriate for your presentation . You may mention other populations who would benefit from this information as well, but explain why you ©2016 University of Texas at Arlington Page 3 of 6

N4685 Capstone Seminar decided to address your target audience. My audience will consist of emergency department staff members which include nursing assistants, emergency medical tech and registered nurses who will be attending out mandatory department meeting. I chose this group of staff since I work with them on both day and night shifts and as I mentioned before I see a need for improvement in our department so what better opportunity than to educate them in person with a 30-45 minute in-service of fall prevention. I believe that family members and all staff members in the hospital from all departments, even those who are not medical providers, could benefit from this presentation.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
