They also lied to him that Man would be moving to America with them once they leave Vietnam since they knew he would not go otherwise. Equally, he was betrayed by Man, who was his close friend, as he lied to him as illustrated in the novel. Man turned out to be the one who was giving the narrator orders, where Man tortures him for his crimes (Taylor). Moreover, in a life that is characterized by unfaithfulness, the captain becomes a victim of been a betrayer and the betrayed. In one of his difficulty moments, he is forced to betray his friends to maintain his cover of being anticommunist. The narrator joins the Generals family and becomes a loved member of the family where he was treated as the right-hand man of the family, but in reality, he is spying the general as indicated in the novel. He is accepted to the family as someone they view as their family member where he lives with them as a family. Markedly, he shares dinner at the same table with the general's wife and children. We know that he is secretly spying the general, which is one of the worst forms of infidelity he discloses. Similarly, he defends the general in many ways that is evident when he says “whatever people say about the general today, I can only testify that he was a sincere man who believed in everything he said” (152). The author who was an immigrant respected the general and awarded him his utmost respect. However, this makes it worse when he betrayed the general. He betrayed him by spying on him while he was invited to live in his house and was treated as a member of the family. As a result, this is an illustration of how the immigrant is willing to hurt everyone including ‘his family’ in order to remain part of the government.
