duo. There is no better evidence for the existence of these generic rules than these subversions. There are three very significant textual sequences in the film that support my thesis. They are the opening scene between the Narrator (who will henceforth be called Jack) and Tyler in flashback, the sequence in the bathroom with Jack and Tyler, and the hotel sequence where Jack learns the truth about Tyler. In these sequences and shots, the use of repetitious quick edits at the beginning with the lessening as the film reaches its conclusion, the use of cinematography to portray the evolution of Jack and Tyler’s relationship, and the use of mundane props to hide the truth of their friendship, a perfect description “An fridge with condiments and no food.” And, as with all tragic friendships, it falls apart because of a woman. The camera come up through the synapses of Jack’s brain, an early warning sign that something is not quite right in his mind. The camera pulls out of an extreme close-up to reveal Tyler’s gun barrel in Jack’s mouth. You don’t need to be Freud to see the phallic imagery of one man’s dominance over another by sticking a long barrel in someone’s mouth. The dialogue and narrative structure of the scene set the stage for the film and are perfect examples of referential, explicit, and implicit meanings. Tyler’s first line: “Three minutes. This is it. Ground Zero. Would you like to say a few words to mark the occasion?” Jack’s first line sets up the narration, making the previously visual trek through his synapses auditory: “With a gun barrel between your teeth, you speak only in vowels. ‘I can’t think of anything.’ For a moment I forget about Tyler’s whole controlled demolition thing and wonder how clean that gun is.” Tyler’s first line establishes his dominance, charisma, and extremism. Jack’s draws a clear distinction between him and Tyler, giving us our first glimpse of his self-conscious and worrying self. The camera then puts Tyler in the foreground, shrouded and out of focus to zero in on Jack. The following dialogue establishes the hidden relationship between Tyler and Jack, stating “You know the saying you hurt the ones you love? Well it works both ways” and “I know this

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
