However, if the individual chose not to go with the basic SHI plan and instead selected a plan that had a lower premium then their access to choice of doctors may be limited and they will need a referral from their GP to see a specialist[Exp12]. Only 3% of patients waited 2 months or more to see a specialist in Switzerland[Cam151]. In the U.S. referral to see a specialist again depends on the plan the individual has. Many insurance plans require referral to see a specialist. Most insurance plans do require that the individual choose a provider that is in network or the individual be may at risk of not having the service covered or be required to pay higher out of pocket. In the U.S. 6% of people waited 2 months or more to see a specialist[The151]. A2c. Coverage for Preexisting Conditions In Switzerland insurance companies are obligated to accept anyone who applies for coverage regardless of preexisting conditions[Exp12].
