had heard a story about his parents that he had never been told that made him extremely upset. Instead of confronting his parents about the story McCandless bottled his anger up inside and decided that he was going to get away from everything and prove to himself that he didn’t need anyone to live. Tim O’ Brien’s soldiers on the other hand did not have a choice to go on their adventure. The soldiers were drafted and forced to report to basic training camp after college. Soon after they were stationed near My Lai, which is not where any of them wanted to be especially the massacre that occurred there.
