Alana went into great depth about her responsibility from day to day as a junior strategist. The best part of the conversation was understanding how much of the job you learn from just doing; she elaborated on the parts of the industry she learned in classes, but explained that a lot of things she had to pick up just from practice and working on them because some work is just not something that is really practiced in a classroom setting. Particularly, I got a deep dive into what working for an advertising firm really means; from Alana’s internship to full-time job, I got advice on the transition between school and work and how it all plays out. Alana detailed how she does anything from working with the data analytics team to research about cultural and consumer trends to make sure that her work is supported with evidence. She does this so that her creative brief for one of her three clients at the moment are supported with evidence of social problems like whether Facebook stories are being used or not since they were technically just a copy of Instagram stories because if advertising is posted on a platform no one is using it’s a waste of money and she isn’t doing her job as effectively as possible. The biggest takeaway from this project had to be the fact that there are so many more jobs available than are truly talked about to students in the variety of classes here at Illinois according to Alana. The coolest roles she briefly discussed included business affairs and various media roles that seemed similar to some of my internship experiences. The best information of Alana’s work life was learning about creative review. After Alana drafts a creative brief for an advertisement, a team comes back with a variety of ways the advertisement could be run and she discussed how cool it is when her visions come to life through other people.

As a current student on this bumpy collegiate pathway, I stumbled upon Course Hero, where I can find study resources for nearly all my courses, get online help from tutors 24/7, and even share my old projects, papers, and lecture notes with other students.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
