Earth with them. The American flag was placed on the moon and a series of activities wascarried out that involved the deployment of a Solar Wind Composition experiment along withphotographs of the lunar surface, its horizon and the region near the landing site , a larger sampleof the lunar surface, and deployment of a “Laser-Ranging Retroreflector” and a “Passive SeismicExperiment Package” (Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum). Apart from themalfunction where the men had to land manually, the Apollo 11 mission was a success. The Apollo 11 mission marked the end of the Space Race. The ultimate goal had beenlanding the moon, and America had achieved just that. Once the landing was accomplished, lunarmissions died down. Though Americans succeeded in the first step on the moon, the Soviets didtry and beat them. The Soviet Union ran into many problems including internal fighting withinthe Russian political structure and lack of infrastructure needed in order to build massive enginessuch as the U.S. Every single fight launched by the Soviets failed and was destroyed, causingtheir program to backfire; they never made it out of Earth’s atmosphere.
TECHNOLOGICAL ADVANCEMENTS THAT RESULTED FROM THE SPACE RACE11The Space Station helped NASA and scientists advance on observing the sun andlearning more about solar experiments. The creation of the first space station was developedwhen NASA was making final preparations to take on the moon mission. The station was namedSkylab and the project was called Apollo Applications Program (AAP). The plan for the stationwas to be launched during Apollo’s last flights to the moon. The station was equipped with lunarmodule structure based telescope, a large enough window for viewing Earth, wardroom, kitchen, washroom, and working space; This was all in the 2nd floor, while the lower level contained themedical equipment, including an empty liquid hydrogen tank with an airlock on the floor. Theempty liquid hydrogen tank was used as a trash can. The space walks could be made near the topof the Orbital workshop (OWS), which was also the main part of Skylab that led to the airlockmodule. The Apollo Telescope Mount was the most important instrument aboard Skylab and waslocated in Multiple Docking Adaptorw from where one could go back to the airlock and the intothe OWS. The Apollo Telescope Mount contained with five telescopes all observing differentsun wavebands. One of Skylab’s greatest accomplishments was the amount of data collectedabout the Earth’s nearest star (Furniss, 2005, pg.98). The Race was very beneficial to society in the way that expanded our human knowledgescientifically, helped our technology advance and improve political relations. Seeking out anegotiation for the reduction of weapons in the West and increased economic cooperation, theSoviets proclaimed a policy of peace in the early 1970s. A new friendship opened up between theUnited States and Russia, along with other Soviet Union nations (Library, 1992).
