of hosts that have open ports. When I double-click on any IP address, Angry IP Scanner displayed all the details that it gathered in a simple summary window. I was also able to add my own comments in the blank field at the bottom of the window. Apart from copying the details of an IP address, I can also perform a range of different activities like opening the IP address in a web browser, FTP client, trace routing, etc. Angry IP Scanner is a simple yet very useful utility when I need a quickly scan a wide range of IP addresses and ports. It doesn’t have any complicated settings and is very user friendly. Nmap which is short for “network mapper” is a veritable toolshed of functionality to perform network scans. Getting the download to open was a challenge for me. Once I was in the right folder and double clicked the icon, the command window flashed right before my eyes and that’s when I had to use the command line to bring up the download. Once it was ran the command line gave a description of what it does and provided a lot of data. Nmap tells me that the device is one hop away, the MAC address of the device and manufacturer of the NIC, the open ports, and how long the scan took. It uses raw IP packets in novel ways to determine what hosts are available on the network, what services those hosts are offering, what operating systems they are running, what type of packet filters/firewalls are in use, and dozens of other characteristics. It was designed to rapidly scan large networks but works fine against single hosts. Nmap employs transport layer protocols including TCP (Transmission Control Protocol), UDP (User Datagram Protocol), and SCTP (Stream Control Transmission Protocol), as well as supporting protocols like ICMP (Internet Control Message Protocol), used to send error messages.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
