Section 4 Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP): Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP)is software that helps the flow of information between the functional areas in the organisation. It is a customised system that, rather than being developed in-house, is usually purchased from one of the software development companies well known for it. ERP packages such as SAP, Baan, Oracle, PeopleSoft, or JD Edwards. The product can be further customised to suit the requirements of a particular company. Many ERP packages are designed to run on the web. Many organisations envision potential benefits from the integration of many information systems existing on different management levels and within different functions. Thus ERP is a cross-functional enterprise system that serves as a framework to integrate and automate many of the business processes that must be accomplished within the manufacturing, logistics, distribution, accounting, finance, and human resources functions of a business. ERP software is a family of software modules that supports the business activities involved in vital back-office processes. ERP is viewed as a necessary ingredient for the efficiency, agility, and responsiveness to customers and suppliers that an E-business enterprise needs to succeed in the dynamic world of E-commerce.ERP evolved from materials requirements planning (MRP), the information systems designed to improve manufacturing in general and assembly in particular. ERP systems now include manufacturing components and thus help with capacity planning, material production scheduling and forecasting. ERP includes manufacturing and its service counterpart, sales and operations planning, distribution and managing the supply chain. It impacts all the areas within the organisation including accounting, finance, management, marketing, and information systems. An organisation can take advantage of ERP systems that use electronic data interchange (EDI) to communicate with its business partners.Implementing an ERP solution may be frustrating because it is difficult to analyse a system currently in use and then fit the ERP model to that system. Analysts need to be aware of the magnitude of the problem they are tackling when trying to implement ERP packages.Systems Analysis – Introduction 9
