Political Economy: interested in looking at the media industry and why certain media  products are produced; what are the economic reasons for the huge push to make 3D  movies; advertising in prime time programming (advertisers pay for the television  programming)  4. Examples  a. Janice Radway’s  Reading the Romance:  became fascinated with studying  romance novels (extremely popular among adult women.) How did these novels shape  the opinions about men and romance? Recruited women who were avid romance novel  readers, interviewed them and studied the novels themselves - - conclusion that the key  source of the pleasure was the ways in which reading the novel served as a small  moment of rebellion/personal time to get away from the stress of life b. Elana Levine’s  Wallowing in Sex:  Elana was a huge fan of Charley’s angels; 1970s  was the period were woman’s liberation was at its peak; changing social policies; argues  that network television in 1970s having to deal with the changing dynamics of social and  political in the 1970s – integrates a new sexual environment; porn was mainstream  media in large cities in 1970s - - television serves as a place for changes  III.  An Integrated Approach to Studying the Media
