his manhood until he feels that he must commit murder in order to prove himself that he is man enough. She also wishes she were a man so that she could do the dirty job of killing the king herself. Throughout the play, the witches tempt others to do evil through the telling of their prophecies. The mischief they cause is a result of their supernatural powers, but mainly it is the result of their understanding of the weaknesses in specific characters. For instance, they play upon Macbeth’s ambition like puppeteers to push him to the edge to kill the king. They tell him about a prophecy and MacBeth believes their tellings and acts upon them. He kills the king, Banquo, and MacDuff with the encouragement of the witches and his wife. It is most doubtful that Macbeth would have murdered his king and other characters without the push given by the witches’ predictions and his wife’s manipulation.
