This relationship has redirected RIEEA toward reconnecting with formal educators and taking its first steps toward an Environmental Literacy Plan (ELP). Working with RIDE, the RIEEA will be able to continue to bridge the gap between classroom standards and environmental education programs. Over 50 stakeholders were involved in an initial meeting on the ELP including representation from the General Assembly, Superintendents Association, Economic Development Corporation, Department of Education, Department of Environmental Management, School Principals Association, all of the leading environmental non-profits, Brown University, and the University of Rhode Island. RIEEA has also been working with the Governor’s Economic Development Corporation on RI’s new STEM initiative. Funded by a $13-million NSF grant, this initiative will dovetail with the ELP, and the two projects will be developed in concert. In 2008 RIEEA held its annual conference in partnership with Childspan, the state’s early childhood professional development agency. Conference attendance tripled and RIEEA gained access to a new
