Minister (Due de sully) Improve the infrastructure Make sense of taxation Work on taming those powerful nobles- make them servants of the state instead of separate powers o 1610 Henry assassinated- leaving France with a little boy Louis XIII as king and run by Maria de’ Medici (his mama) and her adviser Cardinal Richelieu Henry Louis XIII Sully Richelieu In 1620s, religion became a problem again- protest Frenchmen on west coast looking to protestant English for help- Siege of La Rochelle broken by Cardi R.- Protest in retreat o Louis XIII dies, leaving a baby son (Louis XIV) –his mother Anne of Austria runs France with her adviser, Cardinal Mazarin very clumsy politically- alienates nobles, towns with economic policies- Brings on 2 civil wars at the end of the 1650s ( wars of La Fronde ) o Louis XIV become king 1643- as boy. Comes to distrust: 1. Nobles 2. Paris But royal government triumphs by 1660 and Louis become king for real and now we see that goal of absolute monarchy.
