the idea of cycle time and that life is a process of life, death and rebirth (samsara) - the evolution through life death and rebirth - you do the same job as your parents and they did the same job as their parents forever and it’s a cycle – your life is dictated by the cycle - Karma → all action (and its consequences) - Samsara led to redefinition to karma - Vedas it was reference to sacrifices and immediate effects in life - Now its not just about sacrifices - Consequences are no longer felt in this life- now they redetermine their subsequent birth (what realm you are born into is your karma) Human self (* atman ) is, at a fundamental level, one with Brahman - It is the illusion that keeps us from realizing we are one with brahman as an identity - Tied to psychophysical practices- if you do certain meditations you can focus on the single point of awareness whereby you can differentiate yourself from mental processes but there is still something aware of acts of mind (my back hurts etc.) - The idea is that the awareness and bliss that arises from it is the connection between human individual and Brahman – p. 177 - The atman is brahman and they are united – unite them through meditation - The two are premanetly linked together- you cannot find human atman without brahman (storey about guy and salt) - Goal changes Goal: reach liberation (* moksha legit means liberation) by experiencing this identity - Goal is no longer to end up in heaven its to break the cycle The path of knowledge (jnana) - This is a wisdom path - Experiential- you cannot just read upanashads you have to do practices, have the experiences and feel and know the oness of the atman and brahman and through that you can achieve brahman Yama:] Fools dwelling in ignorance, yet imagining themselves wise and learned, go round and round in crooked ways, like the blind led by the blind. The Hereafter never rises before the thoughtless child (the ignorant), deluded by the glamour of wealth. “This world alone is, there is no other”: thinking thus, he falls under my sway again and again.

- Man requests that first his dad is not mad at him (yes) and second he can understand how to do the fire sacrifice (yes) and third he wants to really know what happens after he dies (yama didn’t like this and tried to offer other things) - This is explanation of what he said for what happens after we die - The cycle of samsara (those who dwell in ignorance) He about whom many are not even able to comprehend after hearing: wonderful is the teacher, wonderful is he who can receive when taught by an able teacher. When taught by a man of inferior understanding, this Atman cannot be truly known, even though frequently taught upon. There is no way (to know It) unless it is taught by another (an illumined teacher), for it is subtler than the subtle and beyond argument. O dearest, this Atman cannot be attained by argument; It is truly known only when taught by another (a wise teacher). O Nachiketas, those hast attained It.
