Module Introduction: Use Critical ProjectManagement ToolsIn this module, you will explore the critical path.The beauty of working with the critical path in theproject network, for project managers, is that ithelps you figure out where to focus your attention.This module examines activities in the critical pathand looks at methods of realigning available resources to completethose tasks. If your project is running late, you may need toaccelerate some parts of it to bring it back on track. You willexamine acceleration and compression strategies that can be usedto modify schedules in trouble and you will access a helpful tool toguide your work in this area. When you thinkabout the project network, you can think of the critical path forwardpass as a mechanism to determine the earliest possible and latestpossible start times for each activity so the project completes assoon as possible. Identifying those start times will help youdetermine when to assign people to work.TranscriptOkay, so, we'll take a break from talking about resources for amoment and go back and talk about project duration where wedon't consider resources. Then I'm going to add resources backinto our discussion. So, the critical path method is a phenomenallygood tool to try to understand project duration when there are noresource availability issues, okay? So, what you wind up doing inthe critical path method, is you find the earliest and the latest starttime for each activity so that the project completes as soon aspossible. The activities for which the earliest start times and thelatest start time are identical, those are the ones on the criticalpath.
