So, people have mystical and non-mystical experiences and we go from these experiences to understanding metaphysical principles. For example, Motion. All of this goes beyond sense experience to a grasp of metaphysical principles. This is how people make sense out of sense experience. For example, we know that whole is equal to sum of its parts or greater than the sum of its parts. But the whole cannot be less than the sum of its parts. That is a metaphysical principle. Every effect should have some cause. This is, as Aquinas says, a reflection of reality. The first way is an argument from motion (change). There is a metaphysical principle discussed by Aquinas here. This comes from Aristotle originally. It says motion is going from potentiality to actuality. Second way is an argument from efficient causality. This says there has to be a cause for every effect. For this cause there has to be an effect and another cause behind that cause. The third way is an argument that has to do with possible and necessary being. Here, a new conception has to be brought in. When we say something is made possible, we have experience about it happening or not happening. The fourth way is the argument from degrees of being. There is a lot of disagreement
