On 11 December 2001, China eventually became a member of the WTO, which signified not only its success in the transformation from a planned economy to a market economy but also that it had become a major world economy. Since then, the economic development of China has been closely connected with the global economy. China s manufacturing industries have become a part of the global economy and the consumption power of the Chinese market is emerging in the eyes of the world. From this point on, the whole community has had a fresh new look on design. 2002 8: Design Enrichment in China The evolution of design in China has accelerated since 2002. There are more medium and small design enterprises appearing in the Yangtze River Delta and Pearl River Delta regions. In 2003, private enterprise accounted for 59.2 per cent of China s GDP (OECD 2005: 125). A highly competitive design market and an expanding 430 Into a Changing World design business landscape emerged. International design consultants have also started to enter the Chinese market. This wave was set off by Korean design firms that specialized in mobile phone design. American, European and Japanese design firms such as IDEO, Ziba, GK, quickly followed. Their main clients are large manufacturers. In this competitive market, design businesses gradually diversified; both foreign and local design companies focused on their own market segments leading to a differentiation of service models. by the following: In 2003, US Business Week reported for the first time the progress of Chinese �� design and its influence and future prospects. The publication drew the world s attention to the growth of the Chinese market. In 2004, Lenovo announced the acquisition of IBM s worldwide business for �� PC a milestone for the internationalization of Chinese enterprise. The incident indicated the merging of Chinese design with the international market as part of its economic globalization. Also in 2004, Wuxi Municipal People s Government conducted the China International Design Summit, which set an example of a high-level design conference organized by a local government in China. The programme attracted hundreds of renowned participants from the fields of design, education, business and government bodies from China and abroad. It was also the first time such program was broadcasted by CCTV (China Central Television). The summit was a large variety show of design. Nonetheless, the summit was a good promotion to attract business investment. Since then, many cities in China followed, promoting design together with their city s image. Through this design promotion, the Chinese design activities became more widely known abroad. In 2006, Lenovo won the IDEA grand award with its Opti multimedia desktop �� computer. Since then, Chinese companies have continued to receive other international honours such as the G-mark, IF and Red Dot Design Awards.
