In 2007 i4i had a dispute with micorsoft and ended up winning the case. I4i is a small technology company in Canada and filed a patent for an invention that makes it possible for computers to use regular word processors as XML/SGML in 1994. The invention was a system that allowed users to remove dependency on document encoding technology. In 2007 Micorsoft filed for a re-examination on the patent and were all declined by the USPTO. Later on the owner of i4i successfully sued microoft for infringing the patent. The court awarded the small company $240 million for infringing product, Microsoft Word.
