Afteryou have viewed and thought about Taxi Driver, consider the following points of comparison between The Searchersand Taxi DriverBoth films have a similar story and similar characters: an obsessed “cowboy” loner tries to rescue a young woman abducted by a “hostile tribe.”Travis Bickle as cowboy – he wears cowboy clothing, rides around the urban “wilderness” in his taxi (instead of horse), resorts to gun-play and violence to solve problems. Travis is like the gunfighter-hero whose traditional function in the Western is to “clean up the town.”“Sport” dresses like an Indian. Travis shaves his head in a “Mohawk.”The “Scar Scene” – the scene in Taxi Driverin which Sport romances Iris, telling her he is the luckiest man in world because he loves her. In speaking of the film, both Scorsese and screenwriter Schrader refer to this brief scene as the “Scar scene” because they understand it as the equivalent of a “missing” and perhaps essential scene in The Searchers, which would have shed light on Debbie’s relationship to Scar and her life among the Indians. Although such a scene in The Searcherswould have provided insight into their forbidden relationship, and although this relationship is important to the story because it motivates Ethan’s obsessive searching and vengeful attitude, the film withholds any explicit depiction of it. Scorsese and Schrader thought of it as a revisionist elaboration of The Searchers. (This scene is discussed in Kitses)._____________________________________________________________________Forum Topics1.Trace the motif of the darkened doorway through the narrative and explain how this repeated image contributes to the themes and character psychology developed in the story.2.Describe Ford’s use of cinematography to convey the geographical settings in which the story unfolds.3.Describe the variety of roles played by secondary and minor characters in The Searchers.4.Scorsese and Paul Schrader (author of the screenplay for Taxi Driver) have both openly admitted the importance and influence of Ford’s The Searcherson Taxi Driver. Compare these two films in terms of characters, plot, setting, and any other aspect of film production that seems appropriate. How are they similar? In what ways does Taxi Driver“revise” its model, The Searchers . ? _______________________________________________________________________
