presynaptic cell and its content spill into the synaptic cleft. The neurotransmitter molecules diffuse across the synaptic cleft and bind to receptor sites on the postsynaptic neuron. A specific neurotransmitter can bind only to receptor sites that its molecular structure will fit into. These sites are specifically “tuned” to recognize and respond to some neurotransmitters but not to others. Then, reactions in the cell membrane cause a postsynaptic potential. It is graded and vary in size. Two types of postsynaptic potentials can be sent into cell, one is excitatory, and another one is inhibitory. The former one will increase the likelihood that the postsynaptic neuron will fire action potentials, and the latter one will decrease it. It is depends on which receptor sites are activated in the postsynaptic neuron. Sometimes it will be an integrating signal. After produce at a synapse, the neurotransmitters will drift away from receptor sites or are inactivated by enzymes that metabolize them into inactive forms. Most are reabsorbed into the presynaptic neuron through reuptake, which allows synaptic to recycle their materials. After firing an action potential, the channels in the cell membrane that open to let in sodium close up, and some time is needed before the next firing, which depends on the absolute refractory period, but it is not very long.
