handled (Sekot, 2013). A mentally disturbed individual will be handled differently from a healthy person. When the society has a large proportion of unhealthy people, marriages are expected to face turbulent times, sufferings, fights and children suffer both physically and emotionally. As such, the phycologists are expected to be more involved in devising therapies and operations that benefit the society (Sekot, 2013). The vulnerable ones need more assistance than the healthy although every person will still need to be seen when they face times of turbulence and this is how the discipline of psychology will be affected. The Issue: Technological Advances Technology has paved way to virtually every field imaginable, and as such I had a very easy choice in picking the issue to discuss. Technology has impacted the field of wellness and healthcare. Technological advances like smartwatches, smartphones, and tablets are some of the ways in which technology is used to track one’s wellness. However, these devices must be able to communicate with the user and therefore, came the evolution of wellness apps. Apps are either web or native-based software applications which are installed in one’s phone. Both iOS and

TECHNOLOGICAL ADVANCES AND WELLNESS 4 Android users have access to wellness apps in varying categories like emotional, financial, physical, and spiritual wellness among others. A market research done in 2016 had predicted that close to 2 billion people all over the world would have a health app installed in their phones by the end of 2018 (Reddy, 2017). There are about a quarter a billion apps in the market and the numbers are expected to keep on increasing ( ABC News, 2018). A very important question has always lingered on whether these apps are as effective as they claim to be since some claim to be able to improve mental health with others increasing financial freedom. Generally, the consensus has been that while there are apps that mislead the users, many are helpful and have been used to greater impact to the users. The Target Population The target population of wellness apps are individuals who are very much into fitness programs and would want to be in a position to follow a specific consistent program. This group is perfect for the study as they will be used to show those who do not use the devices and apps what advantages are there for the whole population. A national survey conducted by the Journal of Medical Internet Research mHealth and uHealth reported, “As of 2015, 64% of the overall US population and 82% of persons aged 18-49 years owned an app-enabled mobile phone. Additionally, 15% of the population now owns a mobile phone-connected wearable device, such as a Fitbit or smartwatch. As such, it is not surprising that mobile phone apps, which focus on health, fitness, or medical care (i.e., health apps), have become highly popularized” ( Krebs & Duncan, 2015). Usually these people are well educated.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
