Internal attributions ascribe the cause of behavior to personal dispositions, traits, abilities, and feelings If a friend’s business fails, you might attribute it to your friends lack of business knowledge (internal) or on the negative trends in the nation's economic climate (external) External attributions ascribe the causes of behavior to situational demands and environmental constraints Actor-observer bias/fundamental attribution error When an actor (person exhibiting behavior) and the observer draw inferences about the cause, they often make different attributions Fundamental attribution error refers to observers bias in favor of internal attributions in explaining others behavior In general, actors favor external attributions for their behavior, while observers are more likely to explain the behavior with internal attributions Self-serving bias The tendency to attribute one's successes to personal factors and one's failures to situational factors
