Active Learning Activity 10.3 - Gender Bias and Parenting Use the following exercise to demonstrate gender bias related to parenting. Give half of the class the male and the other half the female form of the following article, with its accompanying rating scale. Calculate the means for both groups and then use these data for a discussion on the differing expectations we have for males and females as parents. -----------------------------------------Female Form cut here---------------------------------------------------- Billings, MT--"While the cat's away, the mice will play" goes the old saying. However, for a Montana woman, the mouse got caught. It seems last month, Carl Thomas was away visiting relatives for a few days, leaving the Thomas youngsters in the care of their mother. Mrs. Thomas, however, took the opportunity to rendezvous with her secret lover Wes, leaving the two children, Rick, 4, and Jean, 3, as she had apparently done on several earlier occasions. This time, however, after many hours of neglect, fear, and hunger the Thomas children were driven to the streets in search of their mother. The police found the children wandering the streets almost 2 miles from the Thomas home and in the process of returning the children to their mother the whole story came out. "I don't see that what I did was so terrible," Jane told an obviously upset spouse. WOULD YOU AGREE THAT MRS. THOMAS IS A POOR PARENT? The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
