Everything that Burns has achieved over the years qualifies her as a perfect example of an effective leader. A good leader should be able to make well-informed decisions that result in positive outcomes. The CEO of an organization has to represent values and philosophies consistent with the company they represent. Xerox’s core values of innovative technology usage, delivering excellence, and corporate citizenship align well with Ursula Burn’s mind set of “checking out”, redefining balance, and getting back to basics (Kwoh, 2013). While Ms. Burns is a very hard working executive, she absolutely believes in not taking things too seriously. In an interview during the 2013 Most Powerful Women Conference, her advice was to “chill out a little

bit” (Burns, Ursula Burns: ‘Chill out a little bit’, 2013). She firmly believes that life is for the here and now. She promotes valuing having fun. Putting in the hard work is required but you can and should make a conscious decision to pick your moments of greatness. If you aren’t having fun in what you do you may be too busy to “see” your opportunity to excel. Ursula Burns possesses the trait theories of leadership that make her the successful individual she has become. For one, Burns is passionate about what she does as the CEO of Xerox. One cannot achieve much success without passion. Burns has confessed her love for what she does, which drives her in carrying out her everyday role as a leader. Another noteworthy character of Ursula Burns is humility. Once certain people achieve certain goals, they tend to become egoistic and suffer from extreme narcissism. Such individuals end up leading their businesses the same way as autocratic dictators of small countries. Ursula Burns’ appointment as the CEO did not change her into the egoistic type. At an interview with one of the media houses, Burns admitted to not being thrilled with the coverage she was getting. She insisted that her appointment as CEO was not about her, but about Xerox’s representation. Burns is an example of a leader that is not egocentric, self- serving, or believes the company is all about them. A good leader needs a balance of self- confidence and humility. Another thing that one has to appreciate about Ursula Burns is that she is authentic and self-aware. Those two traits resonate well with those working for and with her. A certain editorial in Huffington Post mentioned the fact that the employees of Xerox admire their CEO because she is down to earth, grounded, and open. In addition, Burns has the power of communication. Successful communication is based on being straightforward and honest, and Ursula Burns speaks her mind openly, which reminded me of the video by Simon Sinek on TED Talks. I found

that video very enlightening because he mentioned the “why, how and what of the golden circle.” He said that, “all great and inspiring leaders act, communicate in the same way but opposite of anyone else.” What most resonated with me was his mentioning that, “all leaders have a position of power or authority. But that the reason they inspire us is because we want to be inspired by them; because we believe what they believe.” (Ted Talks) "The thing I valued most about Ursula, and why I valued her participation in senior management, is that she has the courage to tell you the truth in ugly times," says Mulcahy.
