covenant was established between him and God that he will father a nation as numerous as the star in Genesis 15:5 “ 5 He brought him outside and said, “Look toward heaven and count the stars, if you are able to count them.” Then he said to him, “So shall your descendants be.””. In Genesis 17 the sign of the covenant between Abraham and God, establishing the beginning of the Jewish faith was revealed. Every man following the faith had to be circumcised, making the covenant with God everlasting in the flesh since it is an irreversible change. Abraham was obedient and circumcised every one of them, following God’s orders. After some time, Abraham gave birth to a son with his wife Sarah, named Isaac, who was to be the promised child of Abraham and heir to the great nation. Abraham is portrayed to the Jews as one who established the Jewish faith through covenants with God. God is referred throughout the Hebrew Bible as the God of Abraham and the God of Isaac, which shows the Jewish belief that it is through Abraham that they know God and covenant with him and without him there would be no covenant and they would be lost. Through these covenants established through Abraham the Jews have identified themselves as God’s chosen people and this has allowed them to find consolation in suffering times, as they imbue their suffering with God’s purpose for his chosen people. The religion of Christianity builds on the Hebrew Bible with the New testament. Therefore, though the story of Abraham remains the same a different light is shed upon his purpose in relation to Christian beliefs. The foundations of Christianity is based off of grace and faith while the foundations of Judaism is the Law as seen in John 1:17 “ For the law was given
