° PERSONAL VISION: ° A personal vision is your vision for what you want your life to be like. ° ° Forming a personal vision will help guide the decisions you make in the future. ° ° A goal is something specific that you want to achieve in the future. ° ° EXAMPLE Going to college, starting a business, and publishing a book are goals. ° ° Personal goals are your own individual goals that you want to accomplish. They may be things you can accomplish alone, or they may require the help of other people. ° ° A career goal is a job-related goal. It may define what type of job you want, where you want to work, what kind of salary you want, and other aspects of your job and career. ° ° Your personal vision can help you decide what your career goals are and what jobs can help you reach those goals. ° ° WHAT YOU WANT FROM YOUR LIFE: ° Use the following questions to help you start thinking about your personal vision and goals. ° ° You can think about these questions in your head for now, without writing out your answers. ° ° What activities do you most enjoy? ° Make a short list of the activities that you enjoy and want to include in your future life. °
° EXAMPLE You might list things like travel, biking, hiking, reading, writing, teaching, and so on. ° ° What activities do you least enjoy? ° Make a short list of activities that you dislike and would like to limit or stop doing, if you could. ° ° Consider when and how you might be able to avoid these activities. Also consider whether there might be a way for you to enjoy some of them. ° ° What things have you never done before but want to try? ° Make a list of things you want to do or experience in the future. ° ° What things would your job need to include in order to make you feel satisfied? ° These can be activities you engage in, such as writing or talking to people, or they can be rewarding aspects of the job, such as helping others or improving the community or the environment. ° ° What things are you especially good at? ° Make a short list of your strengths. Consider what other people have said you are good at, and what you think you are good at. ° ° What are your weaknesses? ° Make a short list of your weaknesses. Consider whether you want to improve on any of those weaknesses and how you might do that. ° ° What values are most important to you? ° These are the values that you want to live up to. They will guide your behavior, attitude, and interactions with others.
