TN vs. IPS 2:42-4:32 Now LCD screens that manipulate liquid crystals in this way, by twisting them, are known as Twisted Nematic panels, or TN panels. Now TN panels are able to turn each pixel on and off very quickly,which results in them having very low response times, as low as one millisecond. And they also support up to 144 Hertz refresh rates. This makes LCDs that use that TN panels excellent for applications like gaming. Another type of panel that LCDs use is called an In-plane Switching Panel, or IPS. IPS panels manipulate liquid crystals using a different method, and it results in much more vibrant and much more accurate colors. However, the downside is that IPS panels can't adjust their pixels as fast as TN panels can, and therefore, have slower response times and slower refresh rates. In general, LCDs are a great display device. They're energy efficient, and they're relatively compact. Some of them can be as thin as 10 millimeters. And they offer a good balance between quality and affordability. But they do also have some drawbacks. Because of how they draw a frame, LCDs suffer from what's called motion blurring or ghosting. This happens when fast movement on the display is blurred. Now motion blur can be reduced by monitors with higher refresh rates and lower response times.But you'll notice that it can't be eliminated completely. In addition, LCD screens aren't able to block100% of the light that comes through from the backlight. So even with a given pixel turned all the way off, an LCD screen still isn't able to display true black. Now, as we've been talking about, an LCD screen can't illuminate itself. It requires some sort of light source called the backlight. It has to have that backlighting in place in order to display information. Fluorescent Backlighting 4:33-5:23 Now older LCD monitors used Cold Cathode Fluorescent Lamps, or CCFLs, for backlighting. Now, with these displays, CCFLs are placed along one or more of the edges of the LCD panel and are used to illuminate the screen. Now CCFLs work reasonably well but they have some weaknesses. For example, CCFLs run on AC power. They ought to have AC power to operate. Well, what does your computer use? DC power. So an inverter has to be implemented within a monitor to convert DC power into AC power. Now both of these components, the inverter and the CCFL light itself, had a tendency to fail frequently. Now, whenever this happens, the LCD screen would do one of two things.As they were failing, the screen would start to flicker and when they completely failed, the screen went completely dark.

LED Backlighting 5:24-7:28 Now, because of this, many modern LCDs now use LEDs for backlighting instead of CCFLs. Now an LED backlight uses a light emitting diode instead of a CCFL. An LED is a small energy efficient diode that emits light when an electrical current passes through it. You've probably heard of an LED display before. Now understand, when you hear a monitor referred to as an LED monitor, it's actually kind of a misnomer because an LED display is really just an LCD display. It's just that it uses LEDs for backlighting instead of CCFLs.
