The freezing point of pure tert -butyl alcohol was 24.98 , the tert -butyl/DI water solution’s was 17.61 , and the tert -butyl/solute A solution's was 16.43 . As the pure tert -butyl alcohol was unpurified by other solutes, the freezing point increased as expected. Using the freezing points of the pure tert -butyl alcohol and tert -butyl alcohol/DI water solution, I calculated K f to be 6.7 *kg/mol. With the K f and the freezing point of tert -butyl alcohol/solute A solution, I calculated the molar mass of the unknown solute to be 16 grams. Obtaining the data was very difficult because I had to record the temperature every 15 seconds. While I did have my partner to help me watch the timer and record the data, I had trouble determining the temperature at the precise 15 second intervals. The temperature of the solutions decreased at a very quick pace. Because of the imprecise readings due to the rapid decrease in temperature, the data and freezing points may have been affected as shown by the temperature vs. time plots for each solution. Some of the freezing points are abnormal like the freezing point of t ert-butyl alcohol/solute A solution for run 1. Our given unknown solute (solute A) was a very thick solute. Because of this, adding exactly 1 gram of the solute into the tert -butyl alcohol for the tert -butyl alcohol/solute A solution was difficult.
