The Dell EMC UnityVSA provides both Block (iSCSI) and the File (NFS and SMB/CIFS) and VVols in one integrated platform. Easy configuration and management of the storage array are possible using the same HTML5 Unisphere interface as Dell EMC Unity purpose-built storage arrays. A consistent feature set and data services, such as Snapshots and Replication are available with the Dell EMC UnityVSA. Benefits of this approach are a low acquisition cost option for hardware consolidation, multi-tenant storage instances, remote/branch office storage environments, and easier to build, maintain, and destroy the environment for staging and testing. Dell EMC UnityVSA can coexist with and provide storage to applications running on the same server hardware, enabling customers to implement an affordable software defined solution. Multiple VSA instances can be deployed on a single server. The Dell EMC UnityVSA single node offering is available as a free 4 TB capacity Community Edition and a Professional Edition (10 TB, 25 TB, and 50 TB) subscription product offering with the Dell EMC support.

Dell EMC UnityVSA HA can survive through multiple different failure scenarios like ESXi host going offline, VM shutting down, or a network switch going down. The solution is also offered with an optional Tie Breaker Node. The Tie Breaker Node or witness node is a lightweight 3rd member of the cluster to arbitrate in the unlikely event all communication is lost between the 2 nodes.

The Community Edition is for test/dev environments, and the Professional Edition is for production environments for the virtual systems. (The Dual-SP solution is offered only with the Professional edition license for 10, 25, and 50 TB capacity.) The license keys are based on the system's Universally Unique Identifier (UUID). These keys, which are included in the license (.lic) files can be obtained through the initial configuration wizard or the global settings window in Unisphere. The user must provide the virtual system UUID and the license authorization code (LAC) ID to download the license file locally. The license file must then be transferred to a computer with access to the virtual storage system. The user can then upload the license file from the local machine to the storage system using the Unisphere GUI.
