and editing. Although there will be mini-lectures on a variety of writing-related topics, we will spend the majority of class time engaging in collaborative discussions and activities. Finally, discussions of homework readings are built in as a class feature. These are designed to nourish the habits of mind and mode of inquiry our text describes for academic writers. They may directly relate to a class activity, or they may seem separate from it and lead to their own topics for discussion. Likewise, some Binghamton Writes essays may directly relate to classroom assignments, while others may only do so tangentially. Because rhetorical analysis is an important part of writing, analyzing the texts you read will make you a better writer. Description of Major Writing Assignments and Portfolio Process-Based Documents: Pre-Research Narrative: The Pre-Research Narrative invites you to explore who you are, what experiences have contributed to your sense of identity, and how those experiences might inform a research agenda for the semester. The personal narrative and reflection in this assignment aims at helping you clarify your research passions, and set you on a path toward successfully completing the product assignments (the Annotated Bibliography, Argumentative Researched Essay, and a Public Opinion Piece). Proposal: The proposal asks you to write a detailed plan for the Argumentative Research Essay. It should demonstrate that you thought meaningfully about a problem, have done research, are able to describe 2

the context of the problem, and can come up with a preliminary outcome for the proposed project. Reflection: After completing the PRN and Proposal, you will write a one- page reflection in which you will comment on the writing and research process for your project. You will paperclip the reflection to the top of the bundle and include it in your portfolio. Major Assignments (Product-oriented): Annotated Bibliography: For this assignment, you will seek out academic and non-academic writing related to a topic you are interested in pursuing (stemming from your PRN). Annotated Bibliographies are working documents that help writers keep notes on essays and articles they believe will be useful for a project and provide some preliminary analysis and description of those sources in one’s own words. Argumentative Researched Essay: This assignment is the central target of WRIT 111, meant to equate to the general kind of academic, researched, argumentative writing you will be asked to do in other disciplines. Given Binghamton University’s strength as a research institution, it’s vital that you establish a conversation you are contributing to by describing, analyzing, and synthesizing sources you’ve explored. Rather than a report that merely observes what was said, your own voice and perspective must be part of the conversation you weave together.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
