M: You still live under my roof and are dependent on me and your father for food and shelter. Therefore this is running away from home. A: Well I don't want to live there any more. I will live on my own. M: And how will you get the money to provide for yourself? A: I'll get a job! M: Who is going to hire you? High-school drop out, never held a job in your life, can't stay out of trouble for longer than a few weeks. A: I'll find a place. You'll see. I'll be fine on my own. M: This is ridiculous. You will come back home with me and that is final. [Sound of bus screeching off stage right.] A: Excuse me, where is this bus going? Bus driver 2: [Offstage] North Station. A: Perfect. Goodbye mom. I'll call. Bus driver 2: That'll be $3. A: Oh. [Pats down his pockets and checks backpack. Comes up with three quarters. M is tapping her foot and watching with her arms crossed. A sighs and turns to M.] I guess I'll come home. M: Come on. [They turn and exit stage left. J returns to his book. He reads for five minutes. W enters from stage left. shopping cart with nothing in it but a few oranges. She parks it next to the trash can and sits on the bench. She picks a piece of dirt off her coat, examines it, and puts it in her pocket. She turns her head and looks at J for a long time. He reluctantly finally turns and looks back at her. She smiles. Sound of bus screeching off stage right. J checks his watch and leaps up.] J: Oh thank god. [Grabs his briefcase and exits stage right. W picks up discarded newspaper and reads front page.] W: Those damn Red Sox lost again last night. They're going to have a rough season. [Curtain.]
