ARE THERE ANY SUCCESSFUL ERP IMPLEMENTATIONS CASE STUDIES?Even though the literature available lacks compelling Modern ERP case studies;Gronwald (2017), provides a detailed and relevant case study that evidences how although
ERP: Individual Assignment13things were not easy to Hersheys, they worked hard to overcome the challenges andtoday it continues to be a considered as a thriving organisation with over 100 years.By 1999, the ERP concept was still something revolutionary to think of, when prioritiesseemed to be others for the industry. However, Hersheys an American company, andalso one of the largest chocolate manufacturers in the world was looking forward tokeeping growing by implementing new and sophisticated ERP software to manageinventory, distribution and customers demand on Halloween period by investing $112million on this project (Gronwald, 2017).After a significant investment in the ERP software, and training workers on this new tool,Hershey’sexperienced multiple difficulties and suffered from an unfortunate lack ofproject management. At the moment the correct decision would have been to suspend theERP implementation project until the holidays passed, but Hersheys investment hadalready laid big expectations on stakeholders, hence suspending the project was not anoption. The worst happened after Hershey announced in September of that year that they weregoing to miss the third-quarter earnings due to issues with the value chain (Gronwald,2017). They already had all the demand in stock, but employees could not successfullyinput that information on the system, causing multiple losses to Hersheys since theycould not deliver it to customers and making them loose the so expected Halloweenmarket (Gronwald, 2017).Even though they survived theHalloween “crisis”, the problems remained, and byDecember 1999,the company announced they would miss already lowered earningstargets(Gronwald, 2017). Fortunately, Hershey finally understood that ERP softwareimplementations were more than just traditional tools, and how they impacted process, people and that the requirements for this type of implementations were like nothing theyhave experienced before.Hershey’s successfully worked on overcoming those obstacles and limitations and onpositioning again as leaders in their industry. Evidence of that is that still in the 21stcentury; they are a relevant company. They managed to boot their sales and exceed itscompetitors at least 4% that year (Gronwald, 2017). Although Hersheys sales decreased
ERP: Individual Assignment14in 1999, the company understood that the problem was not the system, but themanagement. Later in 2000, they could enjoy from all the benefits of ERP systemsimplementations mentioned above in question 1.
