individual is then responsible for a 10% copay on all services including doctor visits, prescription drugs and medical devices[Cam151]. The SHI system does not pay for expenses related to nursing home care, dental care and over the counter medications all of which can also add up very quickly. Switzerland’s healthcare cost continues to be among the highest in the world[Exp12]. The same 2 financial implications can used for patients in the U.S. healthcare system but on a larger scale. In the Switzerland system premiums and out of pocket expenses have a set maximum controlled by the government, in the U.S. system no such control measures exist. Insurance companies are free to charge as much as they want for premiums and out of pocket expenses including deductibles, copays and coinsurance are bankrupting millions of Americans each year. And millions of Americans remain uninsured simply because they cannot afford healthcare coverage. 5
