For a project manager to deal with unrealistic or deadlines one must first discuss with management/owner and figure out if there may be any reasons why the deadline is being driven that the PM may not be aware of. Other ways is by checking to see if adjusting is needed. By adjusting time, cost, and scope one could possibly be out of balance simply needing to be adjusted and bringing back into alignment. When dealing with poor project communication a PM should always incorporate a communication plan. A good effective communication plan is always adaptable and suitable for all stakeholders involved. Other tools that may help with communication include but are not limited are diagrams such as fishbone diagrams as well as charts such as RACI charts. Charts help with labeling problems and narrowing down the causes to problems as well as promoting healthy communication. As a PM it is always important to remember that a successful project must always have effective and efficient communication to help keep everyone on the right track otherwise it will be doomed.
