Long range missles that could travel through space. The Americans were afraid of a nuclear attack. The Eisenhower administration accelerated the space program, and the US soon has ICBMs. oNASAUS creates NASA to combat the Soviets. oDuring Eisenhowers administration, relationships between the Soviets and Americans got better. •The U-2 CrisisoNikita Khrushchev is more moderate than Stalin. He is the new leader of the Soviet UnionoEisenhower and Khrushchev began a dialog of ending the Arms race and reducing nuclear weapons. oSoviets shot down the U-2 (a US spy plane) in soviet areas. The soviets held the pilot of the plane – even though Eisenhower denied this. This flight really angered the soviet union. By 1960 (end of the Eisenhower administration) he had failed to eliminate the tensions between the soviets and the americans. oIn his farewell address, he warned americans to defend themselves against the influence of the military industrial complex. He feared that the power of the military linked with defense industries would be negative for the country.

This prosperity was better balanced than the prosperity in the 1920s. It was more widely distributed. Most of American society actually benefited from this prosperity. •GNP more than doubled between 1945-1960. •Unemployment is low. The average unemployment rate was 5% during the 50s. •Inflation stayed low. The average income increased. This allowed americans to buy lots of stuff and spend their money.
