task structure are the three key factors that drive effective styles… This theory seeks to identify the underlying beliefs about people , in particular whether the leader sees others as positive (high LPC) or negative (low LPC)… High LPC leaders tend to have close and positive relationships and act in a supportive way, even prioritizing the relationship before the task. Low LPC leaders put the task first and will turn to relationships only when they are satisfied with how the work is going.” http://changingminds.org/disciplines/leadership/theories/contingency_theory.htm Effectiveness of each leadership theory : As previously discussed, the effectiveness of the situational and contingency theories depends on four variables: the situation, the task, the follower and the leader. In the process, the leader may begin with a particular leadership style, but may continue with a different style as he progresses in accordance with the changing situation, level of difficulty of the task being performed and the swing in the motivation and moods of the followers. It is for this reason that under the contingency theory, the leader must be very observant and sensitive to these variables and should be flexible in his own behavior. Best Theory in today’s working environment : Path-Goal Theory. Today’s working environment is characterized being fast phased with both the organization and the people composing it have to compete with the fast changing demands of the time, courtesy of Information Technology. People’s lives have become too busy. When they report to their work stations, they carry with them a lot of “baggage” that they may have no time to exert extra effort to figure out what they shall do, how they shall do it, and with what. This is without regard to their high level of commitment and expertise. So in order to bring these high levels and commitment to effect a maximum output, the leader must set the goal and objectives and make clear and easy the tasks to be performed by the personnel How would I lead and guide a business team or group : More than any social organizations, business is the most that is greatly and immediately affected by change. With the present economic recession, the leader should be highly strategic in designing business plans. The goals must be realistic and the strategies to achieve them must be specific and doable.
