OLLABORATION
Was collaboration
with other
professionals,
families, or
community leaders
included for this
lesson? Describe the
collaborative effort.
If collaboration was
not included, please
give a rationale of
why it was not
needed.
No collaboration was used due to having a close reading activity for 3 students
and a specific goal that did not require outside influence other than in the part
noted above.

Introductory/Anticipatory Set
The activity begins with students being introduced to a text with no details
provided other than the title. The students will then do their own research via
internet, local library, experienced personnel from a zoo via email or a
museum. They will determine what they believe it is about and how it makes
them feel. The students will then have their vocabulary cards given to them to
play around with, discuss as a group and match with other words in their pack

not related to the text, these first few steps will activate their background
knowledge. There will be three discussions during the activity where students
will be asked to answer questions and write about them and then talk about
what they found.
Building/Applying Knowledge and Skills by engaging students in their
learning
Students will be engaged by text dependent questions, discussions and writing
about both. At any given point students will be using listening skills, thinking
and analyzing along with being engaged in discussions
Extension/Enrichment/Transfer or Generalization of Knowledge that engages
students in their learning
Students will be engaged in learning through text dependent questions that
demand a deeper analysis of text you can not get from a simple one time
reading without further analysis of the specific wording, tone etc.
Synthesis/Closure
The students will have researched the topic and used their background
knowledge to determine what this means to them and made inferences,
determinations based on evidence, text, word and phrase analysis based on
text depend questions to see the hidden messages and overall a more concrete
comprehension skill set.
